Billie Eilish holds the belief that individuals possess a multitude of facets, and she includes herself in this perspective. “Throughout a significant portion of my life, I predominantly embraced a masculine and boyish demeanor. However, in recent years, I’ve come to the realization that I have the freedom to embody any aspect of my choosing at any given time,” she expresses.
Billie emphasizes that she no longer feels the constant need to prove her identity as a tomboy to everyone. While that aspect is undoubtedly a part of her, she also embraces her identity as a certain type of girl. She acknowledges her femininity, allure, and charm. Furthermore, she recognizes that she defies categorization and can simply be herself, unrestricted by predefined labels.
Another illustration: Within her professional domain, Eilish assumes the roles of a Grammy Award-winning pop sensation and a creator of perfumes. “I distinctly recall the moment when the idea of having my own fragrance was presented to me. I was taken aback and thought, ‘Wait, is that something I can actually do?!’ It seemed almost unreal,” reveals Eilish, who introduced her inaugural eponymous perfume in 2021.
She further expresses, “I hold a deep admiration for everything related to fragrances, and I am genuinely thrilled to now be a part of this world.” By recently launching Eilish No 2, an aromatic composition that embodies a damp and woody essence, enclosed within a slate-grey rendition of the original’s elegantly divided bottle design, Eilish is actively expanding her influence within this realm. She adds, “I have always had a fascination with physical forms, man. It’s something that has captivated me from the beginning.”
“My initial vision revolved around the desire for my second fragrance to exude the scent and sensation of damp, rain-soaked concrete, akin to the aftermath of rainfall on a sidewalk. It carries a distinct aroma that evokes memories of my childhood,” reveals Eilish. “Over time, this concept evolved into a realm characterized by rain, while also encompassing elements of a wooded environment.” This imaginative landscape, much like the bottle itself, is predominantly gray—an aspect influenced by the pop star’s inherent synesthesia. Eilish explains, “In my mind, Eilish 2 has always been associated with this grayish world. There is no scenario where Eilish 2 would manifest as, let’s say, an orange hue or something entirely different.”
The same applies to the original perfume. “It was always destined to possess an amber color. From the moment I experienced its fragrance, it was ingrained in my mind as this warm, amber-brownish gold hue.”
To Eilish, the colors and bottle design hold equal significance to the fragrance itself. “I have this issue where I’ll come across a sample of perfume, not even my own, just a random perfume sample. You know, those little vials with black or white caps that all look identical,” she explains. “Then I’ll find that I enjoy the scent and decide to purchase the full-sized bottle, only to discover that its color and shape are completely mismatched to my perception of the fragrance.” She continues, “As a result, I can no longer wear it because it feels wrong now.” – Billie Eillish
While these musings may appear disconnected, they are anything but. Eilish, a 21-year-old creative prodigy, has been actively constructing her own world—right under the watchful gaze of the public—since the age of 13. In addition to expressing her innate perspective, preferences, and talents, this journey involves maturing, experimenting, embracing new experiences, discarding others, and steadfastly navigating by her own internal compass amidst the incessant stream of external opinions.
